That Creative Time of Day

My house is usually at it quietest between 1 a.m. and 4 a.m. More than likely, my daughter has fallen asleep by default after talking for countless hours on the phone or spending time on some social network, and my wife, despite her tendency of being a light sleeper, has entered into a deep sleep pattern.

As for me, it's my most productive time of day. It's been that way for decades. I'll go as far as to say that it's probably a productive time of day for you if you're a writer or creative arts is your passion.

Think about it. Unless you're working a job that requires your productivity at that time of night, what person in his or her right mind will be up with a pen or notepad, or pecking away on a computer keyboard? But there is something universally magical about that time of day. All of a sudden, thoughts and ideas begin to make better sense. The words seem to flow better. That creative concept all of a sudden seems clearer.

For years, I merely made light of one of my most notable achievements in my former profession as a newspaper reporter coming from a burst of creative energy that I experienced about 2:30 a.m. The story that I turned in later that day was a rough draft. It went over so well that there were virtually no revisions. That same rough draft actually earned me top national honors for best news story in my newspaper circulation category.

The first time I really shared this experience among other book authors was while I hosted my former talk show, Maverick Media (on Blog Talk Radio), in 2009. My featured guest that night was singer/songwriter Brenda Russell, whose work has been covered by other artists: "Get Here" by Oleta Adams, "Please Pardon Me (You're A Friend of Mine)" by Rufus featuring Chaka Kahn, and "If Only for One Night" by Luther Vandross are just a few that went on to become mega hits.

Ms. Russell understood exactly where I was coming from once I mentioned the inexplicable magic that seems to occur during that timeframe.

A good time to write, she said. Often, it's the first thing that we write is a strong idea.

Since then, I've come in contact with other authors who seem to thrive during those early morning hours. They also attribute it to being a time of the day when they're best able to concentrate on their craft and summon much of their creative energy.

I suppose only time will allow me to conclude if any of the work I've now done as an editor, author, or publisher might result in some major critical acclaim or a noted best-seller. Meanwhile, I continue to peck away on my keyboard in the relative solitude in my house: it's also the only time that my wife and daughter aren't interrupting me.

Excerpt from Temptation.com (Chapt. 1)

THE BLACKNFREAKY.COM’S adult dating Internet site was Royale’s obsession. The site boasted of more than four million members, and at any time there could more than 20,000 visitors on the site. The confessions of trysts, first-time encounters, and swingers’ experiences were riveting. The Ebony Freaks Hangout chat room was a popular place for socializing. But its main attraction for him was the plethora of women’s profiles in search of making sex connections.

The site was also a viable source for many of his liaisons because he hadn’t been one to frequent nightclubs or the other local hotspots where he lived in Short Pump, a burgeoning municipality in the northwest sector of Richmond, Virginia. A nice face, delicious set of breasts, or a succulent ass easily caught his attention. On other occasions, he was lured by a provocative profile detailing a woman’s wildest sexual fantasies.

At forty-three, Royale, a divorcee, believed he still had what it took to meet these women’s desires. He boasted of a generous, full head of dark brown hair that concealed his flecks of graying. His dark-mocha face still
maintained a youthful and sculpted structure that hadn’t given way to overweight. He was reasonably tall (six feet) and athletic, weighing about one hundred and ninety pounds. He was confident in his sexual skills, and he wasn’t reticent about it.

Several of Royale’s recent raunchy romps from TheBlackNFreaky.com he would pursue only black women especially after his forgettable summer meeting with a married white woman named Tammy, who went by the handle of AutumnLustNVa.

She had expressed in her profile a craving for an interracial hook-up. Her husband of twenty-three years became exceedingly unappealing to her because he had no stamina in bed and he was otherwise undesirable.

She claimed that she was five-eight, although the face picture that she e-mailed was of poor quality. When pressed for a more accurate description, she volunteered that she was brunette with some graying. She had a thirty-eight C breasts and some junk in the trunk that she promised was worth his while.

After several phone calls and online chat sessions on Interzero.com, they eventually met at an Economaster Inn near RIC airport since she worked in nearby Varina, a suburb community of Richmond in northeastern Henrico County. However, reality set in for Royale in a cruel way.

Excerpt from Love, Song & Dance (Chapt. 16)

ONE WOULD THINK THAT I was in ecstasy after spending time with LeShard, but it was far from the truth. I still had my struggles and inner conflicts. I wanted to live a life worthy of the Lord telling me one day, “Thank you. Well done. Enter into My rest, son.” However, I knew as soon as I left LeShard’s that I should be the first one attending church crying out to Him for help.

So whenever I’ve found myself caught up in my inner turmoil, church had always been a way of releasing that pressure.

My drive back to Atlanta was surprisingly fast. There was no traffic on I-20. I tried calling LeShard once I reached the city limits, informing him that I had made in back; there was no answer.

Blaq’s timing was uncanny. “Are you going to church this morning?”

I answered, “I was thinking about maybe a surprise visit at J’aron’s church.”

“I see. I was thinking about catching an early service, you know what I mean? But I hadn’t yet decided where I’d go.”

“You’re welcomed to come with me.”

“Sounds like a plan. I really didn’t want to go anywhere alone.”

I noticed that I did not have any time to waste if I wanted to make it to Victory Love Outreach for the 8:45 a.m. service. My brother, who’s the pastor, is known as a stickler for punctuality and order. So, as I swooped into the section of parking closest to the church, I barely missed hitting a black BMW 745i that straddled two spaces with its nose out too far. I slowed down and allowed some of the parishioners to pass in front of me.
Then I signaled to turn into a spot next to J’aron’s merlot Infiniti FX-45 SUV when one of the self-proclaimed church dignitaries came out of nowhere motioning me to lower my window.

“Can’t you read the sign? You can’t park in this area. This is for the church’s ministers and invited guests.” He then pointed to another section in the parking lot. “You need to move your car elsewhere.”

Excerpt from Warped Intentions (Chapt. 14 )

When the morning sun did pierce its way into Garner’s bedroom, he was already awake staring at his white-textured sheetrock ceiling and contemplating his next move. To his right, Tamira appeared to be sleeping rather content. And, no, the sun didn’t really tell her age. He ran his hand across his dick and balls. They still felt thick and full, yearning for more.

Garner decided he had nothing to lose. Since Tamira had her back to him, he ventured to enter her from behind. Pussy from that position is just as good as any other, he thought, and he found her slit still silky wet from five hours ago. He made slow, careful thrusts; the sensation of pressing his entire groin area into her ass cheeks made it even more arousing. He reached around and clutched her equally supple breasts.

She reached back to stroke his hip while he pushed his dick deeper. She also responded by pushing her ass against him, moaning. Then she looked over her left shoulder at him. “Is this your idea of saying good morning to me?”

“Not a bad idea, would you agree?”

“Not really—”

Garner hummed with each sensation he felt from Tamira’s pussy. Now he had hoped for her to get into like the night before. Besides, what was pussy without a woman giving it back to him?

“I meant that I didn’t agree with you,” she then blurted.

He froze in mid-stroke. He found it incredulous that she would react that way after he started.

“What do you mean you’re not agreeing with me?”

She was terse with him. “I have other things on my mind right now, and I would appreciate if you would stop.”

A Different Voice: Love, Song & Dance

For more than a decade, readers were entertained by novels written by the late E. Lynn Harris, whose work inspired new authors to share similar stories on love, relationships, and life.

MavLit’s Jevon L. Mack takes that baton and runs with reckless abandon in his debut novel Love, Song & Dance. The book is available in ebook and can be downloaded on Kindle and NOOK. The print version will be released August 26, 2011.

“Fast-paced . . . brimming with coporate murder, illicit romance, love lost and mourned, and bootylicious lacivousness,” says Stanley Bennett Clay, award-winning playwright and author.

Mack offers no apologies about his main character, Ja’Quan Jones, who takes off on an unexpected rise up the corporate ladder. Along the way, Ja’Quan tries finding love after heartbreaks and disappointments from his past.

“Ja’Quan was the combination of six individuals that are distinctly different, yet all shared three common issues: each has an inner sexual struggle, each are born and bred church boys trying to walk by faith, and each want a shot at love,” Mack explains.

MavLit Publishing Debuts Summer-Fall 2011

MavLit Publishing is about action. In less than a year after its inception, we’re poised to bring excellence to your literary world.

On Aug. 26, readers will become acqauinted with Ja’Quan Jones in Jevon L. Mack’s debut novel Love, Song & Dance.

Mack said writing this novel began as a catharsis. “What came from roughly four paragraphs were the emotions, sentiments of individuals and events that happened around me that grazed my heart, mind and spirit, allowing me to free myself and spew what had been in me for so long but never would come out right verbally.”

S.B. Redd was once asked what distinguished him from most authors. Known as The Maverick among his author colleagues, he was quick to respond by saying his work has a differnt voice, a diferent style, and it always has an edge to it. His in-your-face approach is a perfect match with MavLit Publishing.

Mr. Redd rounds out MavLit Publishing’s initial offering of literary work with two novels. The first releases on Sept. 23. Warped Intentions is a novel that provokes readers to ask the questions who can they trust and does everyone you know have your best interests at heart?

The other is a scintillating work of erotica. Temptation.com re-releases on Nov 4, and readers be warned that you should log on at your own risk. This book broaches issues of sexual and porn addiction. Royale Cole is bold, daring, and confident while Ulyssa Howard is a delicously alluring woma who has certain requirements and needs that must be met. The two meet on a popular adult dating and swinger’s website.
